The government is investing £20 million in a Bordesley Green neighbourhood after campaigning by Shabana Mahmood and Councillor Raqeeb Aziz.

The funding is part of a nationwide Pride in Place programme to support overlooked communities.

The money can be spent on high streets, parks and public spaces – with resident-led decision making on where it is spent.

It comes alongside help for communities to save pubs and libraries from closure and encourage councils to block fake barbers, and unwanted betting and vape shops.

Eight areas in Birmingham will benefit from the funding. The part of Bordesley Green covered by the Sparkbrook North Pride in Place funding includes Bolton Road, Camelot Way and Coventry Road.

Speaking after the announcement, Councillor Raqeeb Aziz said:

Alongside residents, both myself and Shabana Mahmood MP have called for greater investment for Bordesley Green.

This Labour Government has listened to us and it is great news for everyone in our neighbourhood.
