The right to live in the UK forever will no longer be granted to migrants almost automatically after 5 years. Instead, it will be earned, under the new earned settlement model set out before Parliament this week.
Recognising that settled status is a significant privilege which allows free and unrestricted access to the labour market, NHS and welfare system, the reforms will mean that how long someone waits will now depend on their contribution and character.
The reforms are largely in line with those set out in last year’s consultation. However, the government has set out a new, fair deal for care workers.
Speaking after the announcement, Shabana said:
Care workers who answered our call after the pandemic, working in the sector as they promised, will be able to settle on their existing five-year path.
Those who have not fulfilled their visa conditions will not. They will be be able to apply for a new 5-year visa to make the contribution they came here to make. They will then be able to apply for settlement again.
No one will be punished for the sins of an exploitative employer. But settlement must also be linked to contribution.
